I met this #watercolorartist in #puertoplata named Daniel, who studied at an art academy in #santodomingo. I was in awe by the simple tools he used to make such beautiful work and didn’t want to take too many photos of it out of respect- but if you are traveling in the #dominicanrepublic I sure hope you’ll support local artists in lieu of “made in C” plastic souvenirs. it was really interesting that he paints the black border to each piece on his large sheet, I’ve never seen that before. This is by far one of my favorite parts about world traveling. #worldtraveler

This was week three we started working on figure ground… this was very challenging to look at the light, the different values of white, gray and neutral, and the different textures of bone, cardboard, foam, plastic, and metal. Practicing stretching watercolor paper in my home studio. I got this marine treated plywood from Home Depot and they custom cut it for me. In the classroom we use homosote board but I haven’t gotten that yet. Stretching watercolor paper lets the fibers swell and reset under tension, which helps the sizing (the protective treatment that controls how water and pigment absorb) work more evenly across the surface. “130 Lancets” and “I Just Want to Eat”, are a part of a series still in process focusing on the emotional impact of Type 1 Diabetes. “130” is the number of finger pricks by lancets a typical diabetic would have to check their blood sugar per week (if they were not using a CGM). These pieces are to help non-diabetics understand the daily trauma of living with a chronic disease.
